Using Natural Material: Clay Cups
Usually, during big gatherings either at the monastery or at sacred places, all of the participants drink the offering tea, juice and refreshments in plastic cups. Now Lopen Karma Samdup La is preventing this by having the community use clay cups. While the clay cups are more expensive, they are far better for the environment. In this way, the monastery is teaching the community how to be sensitive to environmental issues as well as how to act in a way that is more responsible. This small act is one out of many different changes the monastery is making in order to make a smaller carbon footprint. In doing this we are also following His Holiness, The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa’s wish, found in His Holiness’s book, One Hundred and Eight Things You Can Do to Help the Environment. “83. Use natural materials such as earthen cups and leaf plates for large public events.” (Pg. 31).
