World Environment Day, June 5th 2009
For World Environment Day, His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa led a tree planting ceremony on the grounds of Gyuto Tantric University, His Holiness’s temporary home near Dharamsala.

Accompanied by the Abbot of Gyuto and other senior Gyuto monks, Gyalwang Karmapa supervised the planting of ten saplings, various shrubs and a multitude of flowers.

He placed the first sapling, an Ashoka tree, in the ground and watered it.
The Abbot followed by planting a pine tree sapling.

Tsurphu Labrang General Secretary, Drupon Rinpoche, also planted several saplings and shrubs.

Chamsingla, sister to His Holiness, also participated in the event.

During the day, several of the monks cleaned the nearby stream, which had become clogged with garbage, weeds and plants.

Afterwards, the environmental committee appointed monks to continue to lavish care on the saplings so that they will flourish in the future.

Thank you, Your Holiness the Karmapa, for taking this badly needed initiative. For Buddhists to directly address the world’s environmental problems has been something I have prayed would happen.
Thanking His Holiness for planting The Tree …
