His Holiness turns off lights for Earth Hour

As part of his support, he stated:

We should see the Earth as a living entity; it is her existence and wellbeing that provides for us, the houses we live in, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, even the oxygen we breathe. I am very glad to participate in Earth Hour and have asked my monasteries to turn out their lights as part of this global movement. I pray that we carry our commitment to Earth Hour into our everyday lives. This earth is like a grain of sand in the vastness of the cosmos, but it is our only home and we have nowhere else to go. Receding glaciers and rising seas are no longer in the future. They are in the now. We don't have time to apportion blame. We must work together to preserve and protect it.

On Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 8:30 p.m. local time, Earth Hour will once again cascade around the globe, from New Zealand to Hawaii…. Join us by switching off your lights.

Earth Hour is WWF’s largest global initiative where citizens around the globe show their support for action on climate change by turning off non-essential lights for one hour. Having emerged as the largest climate action in history, Earth Hour is meant to inspire individual action  towards responsible consumption and conservation of energy.

This year Earth Hour will be observed from 8:30pm-9:30pm on 27 March 2010. Globally over 800 big cities including Sydney, Singapore, Moscow, London, Mexico, Rio de Janeiro, and Los Angeles are participating. In India, activities for Earth Hour are underway in over 15 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. Among other things, on the captioned evening, India Gate, in New Delhi, will also dim lights in support and witness the Earth Hour celebrations. Almost 5 million people across India participated in Earth Hour in 2009.

Participation is easy. By flipping off your lights on March 27th at 8:30 p.m. local time you will be making the switch to a cleaner, more secure world.
