Environmental Protection has always been at the forefront of Kagyu Nalanda Institute’s priorities.  Inspired by His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa’s passion for the environment, Kagyu Nalanda Institute is committed to the issue of environmental protection, evident through the planting of 500 saplings around the Institute grounds as well as around the local community.

Apart from the involvement of every monk and staff at Kagyu Nalanda in green activities such as planting saplings and   introducing eco-friendly waste management and disposal at the Institute for a greener future, Kagyu Nalanda have also actively invited as well encouraged residents of the local Bylakuppe community to participate in green events at the Institute in order to further the cause of eco -conservation.  Such encouragement has seen lay people like Metok Lhaze Gerutshang donating Rs. 22,500 towards the purchase of saplings.  Kagyu Nalanda has also seen an increase in the moral support towards its green activities from the local public as well as local Indian and Tibetan dignitaries.

Recent high profile events such as H.H.The Karmapa’s Ogyen Trinley Dorjee’s 26th birthday on June 26th, 2011 were used not just as an occasion to honor and celebrate His Holiness’s life but also to celebrate and highlight the dire issue of environmental protection.

Important events such as the World Environment Day (June 5th) were similarly used as an occasion to promote the cause of mother earth. Upcoming events such as H.H. the Dalai Lama’s birthday on July 6th, 2011 will add another tick to the days on the calendar spent by the Institute on honoring, celebrating and promoting the care of our precious mother earth.
